Happy Happy Canada Day!!! I was born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., so I will definitely do some celebrating today for my home land!

I am super excited because I will be on a plane headed to Napa today. And those of you who know me, know that I am always excited to travel. And well, I get excited about a lot of things!! haha! This is how excited I get just thinking about it:

Hair: Bobbie Yanoupeth (Obviously Bobbie did it! It looks way too good for me to have done it myself! He is seriously a genius!)

It's summer... The long weekend is almost here, and I feel like a popsicle. Have you tried the Zoku pops? Go on and get one. Rafa and Mikhail love them too!

We woke up super early (or maybe I should say I woke up super early, kids are up early every day) and did this shoot in the park. Look at that first shot. It's super rare to get a photograph of NO ONE else in Sheep's Meadow in Central Park. And that light! I am loving those shadows too. We sure lucked out.

Hannah, Abby and Sam are amazing. Mike and I know their family really well, and it is always a pleasure to capture their beautiful, energetic spirits. And the cream cheese all over Sam's face? Isn't that the best?

Backlighting my clients is one of my favorite things to do on a bright sunny day. I love the soft light so much that it makes me smile! And do a happy dance!

A lot of people ask me about sunflare, and I often get questions from clients wondering what those "green dots" are on the images. Sunflare. I love playing with light; sunflare is one of my favorite things. The first image below that Mike took of me has lots and lots of sunflare. The image is very soft, and I love that about it. To achieve sunflare, the sun has to be peeking into the lens, just a little. It isn't easy to get sunflare because once the sun starts peeking into the lens, it is more difficult to get a lock on focus.

You will notice that in all of the images below except for the very last one that my hair is glowing a gold color around my head. No, I didn't get highlights! haha! It's rim lighting. Like a halo of light. I love this kind of light. The sun is directly behind me shining through my hair but not peeking into the lens. Once the sun peeks into the lens, you get sunflare. So in order to achieve this kind of image, you need to hide the sun behind the person you are photographing with a small amount of light shining through their hair.

The very last image is still glowing, but the sun is totally hidden behind me with nothing peeking through my hair (well, maybe ever so slightly on the right side) and nothing peeking into the lens.

As you can see here, there are so many ways to play with light. I have so much fun with it. So keep practicing and experimenting! And let me know if you have any questions! I would love to hear from you!

Wendy Norman says:

I LOVE the soft look of the first image, and I often attempt that technique as well. But like you said, getting a lock on the focus is kind of difficult with that much sunflare...so how do you manage to lock in the focus when the client is in motion? Sometimes it takes me so long to focus I miss the moment.

LINDSEYBELLE says:

@Wendy, Sometimes it is tough to get that flare when people are in motion. What I often do is hide the sun behind the person (by moving and ducking! ha!), focus, and make sure my exposure (in manual) is what I need it to be when the sun is in the lens, and then just move the sun in a little bit. Does that make sense?

Shy says:

Linds, you look beautiful in every light! :)

(06.28.11 @ 09:16 PM)
Wendy Norman says:

Yes, that does make sense! Nail exposure, lock in the focus, then move the light in. Totally trying that at my next shoot. Thanks, Lindsey! :)

Georgine says:

Wait so you're saying Mike knows how to shoot sun flare perfectly!? that's amazing ;) You look absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait to see you in Shelter Island very soon!!! We may or may not try giving Trey a private lesson in sunflare LOL.

I photographed Rafay and Mikhail in the Hamptons a few weekends ago. They just turned two. And the funniest thing happened because Aima (mommy) asked the boys, "Who likes to play the guitar?" Rafa shouts out "Mr. Khan!!!" And out walks Mikhail (aka Mr. Khan) strumming on his toy guitar. So Mr. Khan plays the guitar, mommy sings, and Rafa sings along. They like to sing Old MacDonald has a Farm, In the Jungle, Head Shoulders Knees and Toes... The usual kid songs. It's the cutest thing I have ever seen. And then we went to the beach, and we played in the sand and walked in the ocean.

I adore their little personalities. It's amazing and incredible for me to document them every year and to see how far they have come in just two years: click here for a shoot when they were only a few months old.

P.S. How adorable is it that a 2 year old decides that his name is NOT Mikhail, but Mr. Khan? I love this kid. He's going to be a rockstar.

As promised, here is the OUTRAGEOUSLY AWESOME TOTALLY FANTASTIC styled shoot with Hunter and Paul. You may remember them from their engagement shoot that I photographed two years ago. Hunter is THE Hunter of Hunter Dixon. I wanted to do a shoot where the fashion designer was actually wearing her own clothes, instead of models wearing the clothes. Something different.

Styled shoots are a lot of fun for me. I love putting together a team of incredibly talented people and letting everyone run wild with ideas. I totally believe it having a vision and goal, but then letting each artist on the team come up with their unique ideas and specialities. That's when you see everyone's talents at their best. True artists are incredible to work with. I am fascinated, and I learn so much.

Cheers to these incredible artists and friends! I can't wait to work with you all again.
